NISKAYUNA – Frank E. Smith, 72, died suddenly while vacationing n
Vero Beach, Florida (one of his favorite places to visit), on
Thursday, April 7, 2011. He was the son of the late Frank and Mary
Smith of Castleton, NY and was predeceased by his wife of 47 years,
Theresa (Diacetis) Smith.
Frank was born on August 9, 1938 in Castleton. He attended Castleton
Elementary School and graduated from Maple Hill High School in 1956.
He was an accomplished athlete in various high school sports,
particularly basketball and baseball. He furthered his education at
Albany Business College, graduating in 1958. After getting married
and raising a family he pursued and earned his BPS at Empire State
College (SUNY) in 1992.
Frank served in the U.S.Air Force from 1958 to 1962, with two years
served in Tripoli, Libya. After the service he returned home and
worked for the former Atlantic Cement Company/Blue Circle Cement for
34 years, retiring in 1996. While at Blue Circle, he was a Certified
Purchasing Manager and was Past President of the Purchasing
Management Association of Eastern NY. He was a member of the BPOE
Elks and a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectady, NY.
Frank is survived by his daughters, Teresa Burke (John) and Patricia
Montena (Jamie); proud “Papa” of Matthew and Evan Montena, all of
Niskayuna. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Smith of Albany
and his dear friend, Betty Vogel of Guilderland. He also leaves many
cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011
at 9 AM at St. Patrick’s Church in Ravena, NY. Interment will follow
the Mass in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Coeymans, NY.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Frank’s name to
Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY
